Trail Overview

  • Distance: 2 miles round trip
  • Difficulty: Moderate (but manageable, even with kids or a baby in a backpack!)
  • Elevation Gain: Around 400 feet (lots of stairs on the way up)

If you’re looking for a breathtaking hike, the Eagle Lake Loop in Emerald Bay is a must-do! This short, but scenic trail offers incredible views and a beautiful mountain lake reward at the end. Whether you’re an experienced hiker or a family with young kids, this hike has something for everyone. This hike is the perfect way to enjoy Lake Tahoe’s natural beauty without committing to an all-day adventure. The trail is well-maintained but includes several rock stairs as you ascend toward the lake. These rocky steps can make the hike a bit more challenging, but the payoff is absolutely worth it. The beautiful views of Eagle Lake at the top make every step worthwhile!

Eagle Lake: Your Reward at the Top

Follow clearly marked signs for Eagle Loop. At the end of the trail, you’ll be greeted by Eagle Lake, a stunning alpine lake. The crystal-clear water is perfect for a refreshing dip, so don’t forget to bring a towel if you’re up for a swim! The water can be cold, but it’s incredibly invigorating after the hike.

The lake isn’t huge, but it’s incredibly picturesque and a great spot for a picnic or just some quiet time with nature. However, be prepared—since this trail is quite popular, the lake area can get crowded, even off-peak. We visited in September, well outside of the high season, and the trailhead parking was still packed!

Parking Tips

One thing to note is that the parking lot at the Eagle Falls trailhead is small and fills up quickly, even during off-peak times like September! Plan to arrive early or be prepared to circle the lot a few times to secure a spot.

Pro Tips for Your Hike:

  • Start early to beat the crowds and find parking more easily.
  • Prepare for rock stairs—the hike has some steep sections but is very rewarding. Wear your hiking boots!
  • Bring water—while it’s a short hike, the elevation and sun exposure can leave you thirsty.
  • Carry snacks or a light lunch to enjoy at Eagle Lake.
  • Add in some extra steps by following signs to the vista viewpoint!
  • Don’t forget a towel if you’re planning to take a dip!
  • Pack layers, especially if you’re hiking in the morning or late afternoon, as the weather can change quickly.
  • Follow clearly marked signs for the Eagle Loop.

The Eagle Lake Loop is a wonderful way to experience the natural beauty of Lake Tahoe, and it’s a perfect hike for families, solo hikers, or anyone looking to escape into nature for a few hours.
